Chapter 11

Blue

I come awake as a clock chimes somewhere in the room. I crack my eyes open to peer at my watch and groan. It’s two in the bloody morning. Levi had fallen asleep earlier with the suddenness of a child. After food and another bout of sex, he was a goner. I didn’t fall so easily. Instead, I lay for a while watching his face peaceful in slumber and worrying about that message. Eventually, I drifted off, which is why it’s so aggravating to be awake less than an hour later.

Levi makes me smile as he stirs in his sleep and snuggles close, his long body a wall of heat against me. My smile dies away when the moonlight illuminates the burn on his shoulder. It’s a dark mark against his golden skin, and I hate it. Something was close to him in that library. Something that is clearly demonstrating that they can get to him any time they want.

Your light is bright. That’s what the thing had said to him.

I don’t see Levi’s auras anymore. That had stopped a few weeks after I met him. But I still remember how beautiful they were—gold and silver shot through with vivid pink—colours that had undulated around him lazily.

We can safely discount the notion that any of this was a trick by Declan which leads to a horrible thought. Is something in this house targeting Levi because of me? Are they trying to get me to leave and using him to ensure it? I brush a lock of hair back from his face. He wrinkles his nose and smacks his lips but settles back into sleep.

It’s almost funny that he thought he was too boring for me. The truth is that his importance in my life goes far beyond issues of being boring or not seeing the dead. He’s my Levi—those plain few words sum him up. He’s everything, and the fact that this house can see it and he can’t bewilders me. I nuzzle into his neck, inhaling the warm scent of him as he makes a contented sound in his sleep.

I’m drifting back to sleep when I hear the noise. At first I think it’s a dream, so I ignore it, but then it gets louder—a rattle and a whoosh that ends in a resounding thud. The sequence is repeated over and over again.

I sit and peer into the shadows of the room, but the only things I can see are the already familiar shapes of the furniture and the tray on the table from last night’s meal. The noise continues, but I settle back down in the covers. I’m filing it away under None of my Fucking Business.

But before I can close my eyes, I catch a flash of movement. I turn my head and see a liquid substance streaking down the wall near my side of the bed. I blink, but it's still there—a long rivulet that glistens black in the moonlight. My first thought in an ordinary world would be that someone has left a bath running upstairs and the ceiling is leaking.
